There are a few things to consider before you purchase your new acoustic beginner guitar. If you are able to afford a high-quality guitar, by all means indulge yourself and get it. The price tag may be higher but you will find that the quality will be reflected in the ease of playing and in the tone of the guitar as well.

If you’re looking for a high-end acoustic beginner guitar, an excellent choice is the Seagull S6, costing about $400-$500. It may be more expensive than what most beginners are prepared to pay, but it is an exceptional guitar for the price. Even professionals often keep their Seagull S6 after they’ve purchased many other guitars. Another good high-end acoustic beginner guitar is the Washburn D10S. Acoustic Guitar magazine voted it #1 for guitars under $500. Most people looking in this price range will end up choosing the Washburn or the Seagull.

The Yamaha F310, Takamine G-240 and Fender DG7 are all good choices for the beginner. But in terms of price, the most affordable for the beginner is the Epiphone DR-100. Once you gain more experience you will want to trade up, but it’s a great acoustic beginner guitar at $120-$150.

Don’t waste your money on those cheap guitars you can find for under $100 at the local discount store. Even an experienced player would have trouble with these. They’re poorly made and often have an overly high action, as there tends to be too much space between the strings and the fingerboard. A cheap guitar is frustrating and not fun to play, so buy a good quality acoustic beginner guitar.

If your budget is less than $100, you are better off with a second-hand acoustic beginner guitar. If you see two of the same guitar, try playing both of them. Doing this will tell you the personality of the guitar, which might also tell you a little about the personality of the previous owner.

People say you should never buy a guitar from someone who’s a jerk. And while there may not actually be any esoteric elements inherent to the personality of a guitar, the way people treat their guitars tends to be a reflection of the way they treat people. A guitar that’s been cared for and treated properly is going to play better than one that hasn’t. So, even though it may sound fine, if you’re just not completely comfortable with the acoustic beginner guitar you’re trying out, find another one.

If you are a beginner and can’t play worth a dime, ask the store associate to play the acoustic beginner guitar you are considering buying. Any sales person at a guitar store will be able to figure out that you would like to actually hear the sound of the acoustic beginner guitar before making a purchase. Who knows, maybe they will be assisting the next great acoustic guitar player!

Andy Ng is an expert in guitar effects and making the most of your amp. If you like to get that big rock sound from your amp then you may be interested in Andy’s recent article:

Guitar effects will be worthless without amp. Playing through a loud tube amp is a first and a must for getting the most impressive tone out of guitar effects. Buy the tube amp first over guitar effects if you have to choose one. Guitar effects are not as important as having a good tube amp. When using guitar effects, remember that the sound of the effect when used through a loud tube amp offers the best sound compared to using the guitar effect on its own.

I’m a big fan of Fender guitars, especially Fender vintage guitars and amps, so I really enjoyed Peter Lenkefi’s article about the long tradition of Fender musical instruments.

Without a doubt, Fender guitars are the top-of-the-line in guitars. Success in business is often measured according to the amount of money and sales a company is able to secure. The success of the Fender Musical Instruments Corporation proves there are two other elements to consider: dedication and perseverance. From the beginning, it was company owner Leo Fender’s main goal to fender guitars the best as possible. The first fruits of his labor would prove positive his dedication He would reach his goal by designing the Telecaster, a solid-body electric guitar with a Spanish design. This guitar, like many Fender guitars that would follow, was the first of its kind.

The piano is the most versatile instrument around, equally at home in classical, jazz, pop and rock music. It’s also an instrument of torture for some people, haunted by childhood memories of trying to learn their scales. I never learned to play the piano, which I regret, because I love piano music in all its forms.

The instrument was the exclusive property of the wealthy in the past. It was part of a young lady’s education to achieve a measure of accomplishment as a pianist, and she was expected to give recitals to guests at family soirees. As the cost came down, the middle and working classes were at last able to buy their own piano, which sat proudly in the best room. Families would gather round and have sing songs. The automated player piano, with its rolling canister of recorded piano music was very fashionable at one time. The piano would eventually be replaced as the heart of the household by the wireless and later, the television set.

In the world of classical music, there is a division between people who think historical piano music should be played on original style instruments and those who think they should be played on a modern piano. Composers such as Liszt, Brahms and Hadyn would have played on instruments quite different from the ones that we are familiar with today. The piano has gone through many changes over the years, in appearance and sound. Some people want the authentic tone of the original, whilst others prefer the technical reliability of today’s piano.

As a small child I remember going to my cousin’s high school football games and being totally taken in by the halftime show. I remember seeing all the band musical instruments and knew that when I got older, I too would be out there marching. It wasn’t long before I was learning all I could about those instruments, trying to decide which one I should play. Here’s what I learned.

As a sometimes musician, I have a very strong belief about using instruments for decorative purposes: you should not. People who collect antique musical instruments really bother me, and sometimes they anger me outright. It seems to me that, whether or not it is an antique musical instrument, its purpose is to be played. I can understand decorating your walls with a few antique musical instruments that are in no shape to be played at all, but if they are playable, there is probably someone somewhere who would simply die to be able to make music on them.
